omg i finally have the time to post an entry!
so i'm well immersed into the life here..doing surgery in the states is soooooooooooooooo tiring..i'm at the hosp 5 days a week (which is actually pretty good as i get wkends off to do my own thing) but i pretty much start at 6am each day and go till past 6pm, sometimes past 7pm..4 days a week of theatre time so it's pretty much standing all day..
the theatre area here is pretty fancy! they have their own cafeteria in the compound..there's also a machine dat dispenses scrubs..however, as elective students, we have to use disposable scrubs, which is kinda cool in its own way except there's only size medium, large or extra large..so i look kinda lost in my scrubs..the theatre rooms themselves are pretty hightech..there's 2 huge video screens and one has the record of wat's going on..everything is pretty much computerised here..the other screen can be used as a video screen to show wat's going on cos one of the lights is a camera and sometimes can also be used to correspond with pathology..they communicate via speaker and sometimes pathology specimen slides can be seen using dat screen..so cool..
been seeing lots of interesting cases..very invasive surgery with amazing results..lots of intricate dissections..but unfortunately don't really get to do much except the usual retraction and cutting of sutures..cos there's usually quite a few ppl scrubbed in and since head and neck is such a delicate area, they prob wouldn't want the med student to be doing any harm..even the resident doesn't get to do much and he complains to me..hahaha..
so most wknights, i'm too tired out to do anything much..so i usually eat, shower, check my emails and then maybe some study, and then sleep..esp since i have to get up at 4.30am on most days..it's crazy..
and then i try spending my wkends doing the touristy stuff..last wkend i went to the natural history museum and st john's cathedral, saw a jazz recital which was pretty cool..went all the way to New Jersey to go for an Easter service..dat was pretty cool..also checked out a bit of the Easter Parade happening on 5th Ave but it wasn't dat interesting..also went to Brooklyn Bridge for the AMAZING views..
this wkend..my sis and 2 of her frens were in town visiting..they came over on wed nite and i was lucky enuf to get thu off so we went to woodbury common for a FULL day of outlet shopping..i'm totally broke now..spent soooo much money dat day..bought shoes, clothes, accessories..more clothes..more shoes..oh dear..i've already bought 4 pairs of shoes here..haha..i have no idea how im gonna bring stuff back home..and then also got to go to Rockefeller Centre and see the nite view of New York..went on the Staten Island Ferry to see Ms Liberty herself..(one of my fren's fren calls her ahjumma..haha)..also went to South St Seaport..went to Brooklyn Bridge AGAIN! and queued for an hour for the famous ice cream there..and then went to see Chicago the musical! today went to Chinatown and had malaysian food! then went shopping in Soho and ended up in East Village to see the Blue Man Group show..dat was cool..
so ive been extremely busy for the past days..settling into the hosp life as well as trying to make my time here worthwhile..my sis and her frens leave on tues so tmr nite prob gonna go out for dinner..and then gonna go watch Wicked on thu nite! def looking forward to dat..and Cirque du Soleil is in town so i'm considering watching dat too..see, this is how im getting broke..
ok better go and sleep soon cos need to wake up early tmr..zzzzzzzzz
