warning: medical entry ahead...
so i was rostered to work this wkend. and i haf to say after this wkend's experience, i now understand why ppl hate working on weekends or nights. becos everything is not automatic! if i wanna order radiology, i actually have to call the radiographer on call! and there are only 3 house surgeons in the entire hospital at one point to cover everything. admissions, ward work. pager was going off constantly.
the first day, the consultant on call was a geriatrician. and she was getting a bit stressed cos she had 2 first year house surgeons doing medical and the acute patients were quite complicated. one patient ended up having compartment syndrome. others had complex blood pressure issues. it was very stressful. then i got paged to admit a cardiac triage. in the middle of writing my notes, the arrest pager goes off. sigh. man in ed with bradycardia and complete heart block. everything i learnt in my acls course is difficult to apply in real life. dose of atropine? cant remember..haha. it was quite chaotic. but interesting experience nevertheless. man went to dunedin icu. so the consultant was busy dealing with dat. and then i had to do jobs in the rehab ward. irritating. 2 women in the same room with breast fungal infection. both not wearing bras. plan: wear bra. lol.at least i ended on time. but didnt get to eat lunch till i finished. sigh.
the 2nd day, which is today, had a bad start. i thot i was on time. i set my alarm for 7.15 and i was snoozing away. then suddenly my pager goes off. i look at my cellphone time, it's still early, why are they paging me?! then i look at my other clocks and watch, OMG! it's 8.20!!! called the hosp, they were asking where i was. FML. rushed, got changed, in CCU by 8.30. i figured out my phone was trying to be too smart. went back one hour in preparation for daylight savings which is in 2 wks. sigh. and im gonna be working the real daylight savings wkend too. sigh. anyways. luckily ward round hadnt started. then one of my patients decided to deteriorate. crap renal function, super high white cell count, poor iv access. needing iv antibiotics. sigh. personally i dont think she will make it. see how she is tmr. :( then once again, doing jobs in rehab ward. had to see this stupid man who decided to fall overnight and has pain ++. sigh. ordered xray. got paged after xray, man has fractured NOF! means i have to call the orthopaedic surgeon on call. AHHHH!!! i started getting palpitations while dialing the no. i hate orthopaedics and dislike orthopaedic surgeons cos the vast majority are not nice. oh well, at least he agreed to see the patient. but i had to do bloods and put in a catheter. poor man. at least i dragged the poor paediatrics TI to help me. hehe..big thanks to her..so think the man will end up in theatre. then went home at 4pm. on the dot.
the good thing abt this wkend was the small no of admissions. the ward work itself kept me super duper busy. even the house surgeon on long day had time to facebook. so not a bad wkend to work. but i dunno how i would survive my next wkend. which is easter wkend. thu long day, fri short day, sun and mon long day. will absolutely die on tues.
on another note, went to see the specialist on mon regarding my illness. all my bloods are finally normal! except for ggt. sigh. which means i still cant drink! even the specialist said prob better to wait till the ggt is normal before i start drinking. miss alcohol. haha. sound like an alcoholic. but i still have spots! im so irritated by them. wat am i gonna do when i go to the islands?!?! im gonna look like a spotty fish when i swim! grrr...
oh well, time to read my journal article. sian to the max...

Oh my goodness! Your weekend is like worse than mine that I did two weeks ago! I thought I was going to sink to the ground with all the sick patients on the ward (I was the H/O covering wards and there were so many sick patients with GI bleeds that weekend!) I think if the reg didn't get to this one guy in time, he would have bled to death! eeks! Oh well. I learn.
I guess the good thing about Waikato is that we have lots of H/O so we don't get rostered on too often.I can't imagine myself doing every alternate weekend!
Hope this Easter weekend goes well for you. I'm working Easter Monday myself. Hope it doesn't get too crazy. haha.. :)
